Creator Spotlight with Punk Rock Singer Grant Kemp

This week we’d like to introduce you to punk rock singer Grant Kemp. You can listen to Grant’s music on Spotify and Apple Music. Be sure to also follow Grant on both Instagram and Twitter.

What was the inspiration behind becoming a creator? What do you enjoy most about the creative process?

I’ve always taken a creative approach when it comes to expressing myself. I always try to take situations that I’ve been in and convey them to others in a way they can relate to.

Can you talk through your creative process? How long does it take? Does everything you produce make money?

My creative process usually begins with a relatable experience I’ve had. I try to create the most organic environment possible so things come more naturally. As far as timing goes, it usually happens quickly if I have a good idea. The people that I choose to have around me during that process are extremely impactful to the outcome, so I do my best to be mindful of that.

What do you think is the biggest misconception about your line of work?

I think the biggest misconception about my line of work is how many people are involved in supporting an artist. From the music itself to the people that are behind the scenes like producers and managers. Without them there’s no way to get your music to the people so I think they deserve a lot more credit.

When did you first become aware of copyright, and why?

I first became aware of copyright when I started in the entertainment industry and heard a lot of terrible stories about people having their music stolen. Especially smaller artists that don’t have the resources to take the proper action.

What is the best piece of advice that you would give other creators in your field about copyright and how to protect themselves?

The best piece of advice I can give to other creators is to always register your works for copyright protection. I also recommend protecting smaller projects (such as a sound you create on a TikTok that could go viral). Anything that you create can be stolen from you and used for profit so it has to be protected.
