Five Questions with Graphic Artist Marty Blake
This week we would like you to meet creator member Marty Blake.
1. What was the inspiration behind becoming an illustrator, collagiste, graphic designer and art director?
My clientele, and the types of projects I work on, derive from my love of art, books, and fine food. My interest in graphic arts is in response to the democratic aspect of the form: that everybody, regardless of economic standing, has access to the culture of books, posters, packaging, etc.
2. What do you enjoy most about the creative process?
Striving to invent something I haven’t seen yet.
3. Can you take us through your process, and elaborate on how long it lasts?
It depends on the project. I’ve worked on such a range. It could take an hour or a year, or anything in between.
4. What is the biggest misconception about your line of work?
That anyone with the hardware and software can do it.
5. What is your best piece of advice for fellow creators in your field about copyright and how to protect themselves?
Pay attention. Technologies are always changing, and copyright laws can change. Register your artworks, append the metadata, read your client contracts closely, and keep an eye on the distribution of your images.
In recognition of the 2018 World IP Day theme established by WIPO – Powering Change: Women in Innovation and Creativity – we are honored to feature and support female creators during the month of April.
