World IP Day 2024: Intellectual Property and Sustainable Development Goals

World IP Day 2024 is an opportunity to explore how intellectual property (IP) encourages and can amplify the innovative and creative solutions that are so crucial to building our common future. — WIPO

From April 22-26, 2024, the Copyright Alliance will celebrate World IP Day (WIPD) Week by joining our members, partners, and countless creators and organizations around the world to mark the occasion. We will do so by amplifying blogs and videos, hosting a virtual event with our co-host partners, and much more—all designed to celebrate the fact that IP helps the global arts scene flourish, and enables the innovation that drives human progress.

The 2024 World IP Day theme, as determined by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity.

Sustaining and Empowering the Creative Community Through Copyright

The Copyright Alliance and 18 Community Partner organizations co-hosted a panel via Zoom, titled Sustaining and Empowering the Creative Community Through Copyright. The panel is in keeping with the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) 2024 theme, IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity. During the event, panelists discussed how creators can meet their goals today while helping to ensure that tomorrow’s creative community is sustained through job growth, a strong creative economy, and continued growth of the arts, all of which are perpetuated through copyright protections.

Copyright Alliance CEO Keith Kupferschmid introduced the event; U.S. Copyright Office Associate Register of Copyrights and Director of Public Information and Education Miriam Lord provided opening remarks; and Maribel Quezada Smith, Founder of BIPOC Podcast Creators and video/podcast producer, moderated. Panelists included Eric Schwartz, Partner, Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP (MSK) and Founding Director and Vice Chair, National Film Preservation Foundation; Mary Rasenberger, CEO, Authors Guild; Taura Stinson, Academy Award nominated songwriter, composer, producer, and author; and Bijou Mgbojikwe, Senior Policy Counsel, Entertainment Software Association (ESA).

In honor of World IP Day 2024, Copyright Alliance CEO Keith Kupferschmid shared the following message with the creative and copyright communities, one that speaks to the history of copyright law and intellectual property protections, as well as articulates the importance of this year’s theme as established by the World Intellectual Property Organization:

Copyright and intellectual property protections benefit societies across the globe by incentivizing creativity and innovation. They also make it possible for the world to enjoy inspiring works of art, music, books, photos, and so much more. And at a time when global economies are experiencing many new challenges, we need strong and vibrant copyright laws now more than ever to help protect the works of creators both today and tomorrow.

So, as we look toward celebrating World IP Day on April 26, 2024, I’m pleased that the World Intellectual Property Organization announced that this year’s theme is IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity. The theme provides the perfect opportunity to recognize that creators are flourishing and succeeding today with the help of copyright protections, while also helping to build a stronger creative economy for the decades ahead.

By applying their intelligence, diligence, innovation, and creativity toward creating copyrighted works today, artists, photographers, designers, game developers, and all types of creators across the world can simultaneously make the future better for those who will live in tomorrow’s global community. They will do this through fostering continued job growth, perpetuating a strong creative economy, and continuing to grow the arts, all of which are supported through copyright protections.

Lastly, I, along with the entire Copyright Alliance team, wish you all the best for a Happy World IP Day 2024, and a very successful and creative year ahead!

– Keith Kupferschmid, CEO, Copyright Alliance
