Copyright Alliance Applauds Yesterday’s Intro & Today’s Unanimous Passage of Music Modernization Act of 2018 (H.R. 5447)
April 11, 2018STATEMENT
Washington, D.C. – The Copyright Alliance applauded yesterday’s introduction and today’s unanimous, bipartisan approval of the Music Modernization ActÊ(MMA) of 2018 (H.R. 5447), which was passed by the House Judiciary Committee by a vote of 32-0.
According to Copyright Alliance CEO Keith Kupferschmid, “The Music Modernization Act of 2018 (MMA) joins together the Music Modernization Act of 2017, the CLASSICS Act, and the AMP Act, and will result in the most significant improvement of music copyright law in more than a generation. It will help make it easier for creators across the music industry to earn a more equitable living through their creativity.”
Kupferschmid continued by adding that “After years of compromise and collaboration across the music, tech and policy sectors to reach this point, the Music Modernization Act of 2018 will help songwriters to be better compensated for their work and positively impact how their music is licensed; enable legacy artists (who recorded music before 1972) to be paid royalties when their music is played on digital radio; and provide a consistent legal process for studio professionals Ð including record producers and engineers to receive royalties for their contributions to music that they help to create. We commend Chairman Goodlatte (R-VA) and Ranking Member Nadler (D-NY), Representatives Collins (R-GA) and Jeffries (D-NY), and all who demonstrated vigorous backing for this critical piece of legislation, enabling it to be passed through committee with tremendous bipartisan support.”
