Copyright Alliance Applauds House Passage of the CASE Act
Washington, D.C. – The Copyright Alliance applauded this evening’s passage of the CASE Act (H.R. 2426) by the House of Representatives, by a vote of 410-6.
According to Copyright Alliance CEO Keith Kupferschmid, “Today’s vote by the House further attests to the tremendous support that’s been demonstrated for the CASE Act, legislation that will provide U.S. creators with a viable means for defending their copyrighted works through the creation of a small claims tribunal within the U.S. Copyright Office.
“The CASE Act continues to be a legislative priority for hundreds of thousands of photographers, illustrators, graphic artists, songwriters, authors, bloggers, YouTubers and other types of creators and small businesses across the country. These creators are the lifeblood of the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, they currently have rights but no means to enforce them because federal court is too expensive and complex to navigate. Copyright law should protect all of America’s creators. However, today it only protects those who can afford the high costs of federal court and legal representation. The CASE Act will change this by providing creators with a voluntary, inexpensive, and streamlined alternative that they can use to protect their rights, their creativity and their livelihoods.
“Today’s vote by the House demonstrates not only the tremendous support for the bill but also the fact that members of Congress could not be bamboozled into believing the numerous falsehoods about the CASE Act that were proffered by those who philosophically oppose any copyright legislation that will help the creative community and who will use any means to achieve their illicit goals.
“There’s a long list of supporters in Congress that we want to thank for their unbridled support of the CASE Act and the creative community. At the top of that list is Representatives Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Doug Collins (R-GA) for their leadership in introducing the CASE Act in the House. We also thank the original co-sponsors of H.R. 2426, Representatives Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Hank Johnson (D-GA), Martha Roby (R-AL), Judy Chu (D-CA), Ben Cline (R-VA), Ted Lieu (D-CA), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). And our appreciation extends to all co-sponsors of this critical legislation.
“We look forward to working with the Senate and other stakeholders as the CASE Act moves to the Senate floor and eventually to the oval office.”
