Creator Member Catch-Up with Artist, Author, & Doctor Grisell Vargas
This week, we caught up once again with artist, author, and doctor, Grisell Vargas. We first interviewed her in 2024, and since then, her creative career has continued to advance. After reading her catch-up blog, be sure to follow her on Instagram.
How has your creative career evolved since we last spoke?
Since we last spoke, my creative journey has expanded with a series of exhibitions that have strengthened both my artistic voice and my international presence. Showing my work at the Éthéré exhibition at the Van Gogh Gallery in Madrid in January 2025 was a powerful start to the year, followed by the honour of being selected for their Signature Exhibition at the International Contemporary Art Fair in Monaco this coming September. I also continued growing within my local artistic community through the Women’s Art Society of Montreal Fall Exhibition. And now, preparing to present my sculptures at Dot Miami this December has pushed me to create with even more intention and depth. Each of these experiences has shaped my evolution—blending emotion, science, and movement into a clearer, more confident expression of who I am as an artist.
How has copyright continued to help fuel your growth?
Copyright has become a vital part of my growth as an artist. It gives me the confidence to share my work openly, knowing that each piece is protected. As my presence expands across international exhibitions and digital platforms, copyright helps me maintain the integrity of my creations and build trust with galleries, collectors, and institutions. It reinforces the message that my work has value, authorship, and intention—allowing me to focus on creating with freedom and authenticity.
Is there anything related to copyright that you want to learn more about? What resources do you use in order to learn more about copyright?
I still want to deepen my understanding of how copyright applies internationally, especially as my work travels across borders. I rely on organizations like the Copyright Alliance, artist-centred platforms, and legal educational resources to stay informed. Each bit of knowledge helps me navigate a fast-moving digital world with more confidence.
Where do you draw inspiration from when you create your works? Is there a specific creator you look up to, and if so, why?
I draw inspiration from the intersection of emotion, science, and nature—water, anatomy, movement, and the subtle narratives that live beneath the surface of our everyday experience. But I’m also deeply inspired by the energy that comes from connecting with other artists; their perspectives, conversations, and creative courage always expand my own vision. Exhibitions in museums and galleries play an important role too—they remind me of the timeless dialogue that art creates across cultures and generations. I don’t look up to one specific creator, but rather to a constellation of artists and thinkers whose authenticity and emotional honesty push me to keep exploring my own truth.
Have you ever experienced creative block? How do you overcome it?
Yes, I have. For me, creative block usually isn’t about the absence of ideas—it’s about being out of alignment with myself. When that happens, I return to presence: movement, silence, or reconnecting with nature. I let my scientific mind observe, and my emotional side breathe. Eventually, the tension dissolves, and creativity flows again. The key is to stop forcing the process and allow inspiration to find me where I am.
How has AI technology impacted your works and career?
AI has become a supportive companion in my creative ecosystem. It doesn’t replace the human essence of my art, but it enhances the way I organize concepts, refine my artistic statements, and communicate my vision. It helps me streamline tasks so I can dedicate more time to the physical, emotional, and intuitive act of creating. AI has amplified my reach and efficiency, while my hands, my intuition, and my lived experience continue to lead the work.
If you could pass on one piece of advice to other creators, what would it be?
Protect your voice and trust the rhythm of your own evolution. Create from truth, not comparison. Allow your curiosity to guide you, your resilience to shape you, and your authenticity to speak louder than trends. Art becomes powerful when it carries the essence of who you are. So, honour that, every day.
