Washington, DC – Following the death of former Register of Copyrights Marybeth Peters who passed away on September 29, Copyright Alliance CEO Keith Kupferschmid initiated the following statement:
According to Kupferschmid, “All of us at the Copyright Alliance are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Register of Copyrights Marybeth Peters who led the U.S. Copyright Office for 16 years, from 1994 to 2010, and who dedicated 40-plus years of her career to copyright policy and leadership.
“A distinguished attorney who was broadly respected around the world, Marybeth was a leading expert on both U.S. and international copyright law. During her tenure at the Copyright Office, she was instrumental in countless important initiatives, including helping to implement the 1976 Copyright Act and the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which serve as cornerstones of today’s copyright law.
“Marybeth’s contributions to the Office and to copyright policy are significant and formidable. But she was also known for her role in mentoring and inspiring so many professionals who worked alongside of her during her long tenure.
“I consider myself extremely fortunate and honored to have worked for and alongside Marybeth for so many years and to experience and be the beneficiary of her wit, wisdom, tutelage, friendship and, of course, her trademark belly laugh.
“For reasons too numerous to count, Marybeth will be sorely missed and will long be remembered as a true leader and champion for the copyright world. There’s no doubt that her legacy will live on to inspire those who follow on her path.”
