Copyright Alliance Welcomes Songwriters Guild of America, Society of Composers and Lyricists, and Music Creators North America as its Newest Members

Washington, DC – The Copyright Alliance, which represents the copyright interests of over 1.8 million individual creators and more than 13,000 organizations across the spectrum of copyright disciplines, announced the addition of three new members—Songwriters Guild of America, Society of Composers and Lyricists, and Music Creators North America.

The Songwriters Guild of America (SGA) is an organization dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights of songwriters since 1931. Its mission is carried out through music advocacy on Capitol Hill and elsewhere; through the services it provides to professional and developing songwriters; and through community outreach via the Songwriters Guild of America Foundation. According to SGA President Rick Carnes, “SGA has been actively engaged in joint projects with its colleagues at the Copyright Alliance for many years on many important issues and is now pleased to officially join the organization. It is clear that the threats to creators’ rights and incomes in the U.S. and around the globe have recently grown so acute that our groups must coordinate our energies on an even more collaborative basis. We look forward to working closely with Keith and the whole Copyright Alliance team on matters crucial to all of us.”

The Society of Composers and Lyricists (SCL) is a non-profit dedicated to advancing the professions of film/TV/multi-media music composers, songwriters, and lyricists by striving to share information on the creative and business aspects of writing music and lyrics for visual media; presenting educational seminars; fostering a sense of community among its members; and sharing experience and knowledge. According to SCL President Ashley Irwin, “Like so many artists, music creators’ livelihoods are increasingly under threat from entities who blithely exploit their works with little or no compensation. The SCL looks forward to working with the Copyright Alliance to reverse this insidious trend by strengthening the laws that protect Intellectual Property.”

The Music Creators North America (MCNA) is an alliance of independent songwriter and composer organizations that advocates and educates on behalf of North America’s music creator community. As the only internationally recognized voice of American and Canadian songwriters and composers, MCNA, through its affiliation with the International Council of Music Creators (CIAM), represents the professional interests and aspirations of more than half a million creators across Africa, Asia, North and South America, and Europe.
