Copyright Alliance Launches AI Campaign

July 1, 2025

Effort will mobilize creative community voices behind pro-innovation, pro-worker policies that leverage and extend America’s strategic edge in high-value creative works used to develop and train AI.

Campaign grassroots members have already sent more than 6,500 letters to policymakers urging a smart, pro-America approach to training in the Administration’s upcoming Action Plan. Make your voice heard by joining the grassroots letters campaign here.

Full court media press, including digital ads, social media outreach, research, events, and opinion leadership is underway leveraging the Copyright Alliance’s massive grassroots base.

Washington, DC—Today, the Copyright Alliance announced a new public affairs campaign to advocate for pro-America, pro-IP, and pro-worker AI policies that leverage our unique strategic advantage as the world’s largest and most culturally influential creative economy.

The new campaign will explain how protecting intellectual property powers innovation and strengthens America in the global race for leadership on AI, boiled down to three core principles: “Strong IP Strong AI Strong US.”

This campaign enters the field at a critical moment, as court cases proceed toward authoritative appellate decisions that will shape the legal landscape for AI training, the Administration works toward a July release of the AI Action Plan required by President Trump’s Executive Order #14179, and the marketplace for licensing AI training materials continues to develop and expand.

In a statement about the campaign, Copyright Alliance CEO Keith Kupferschmid noted, “Our message is simple: America does best when there is honest competition, property rights are respected and enforced, and creativity is valued and protected. In the global race for leadership on AI, we want to beat China, not be China.”

America Wins AI: Strong IP Strong AI Strong US

Americans produce the world’s most valuable creative works, widely sought after and used to develop and train AI.

Copyright law incentivizes and protects this strategic advantage by empowering creators, workers, and individuals to control their work, typically requiring users of copyrighted works, including those in foreign states like China and Russia, to get permission and pay American creators before using and exploiting their work.

Calls by some generative AI giants to “delete all IP” or categorically pronounce all AI training as “fair use” that can proceed without getting permission or paying creators, workers, and rightsholders would forfeit this U.S. strategic edge, allowing any company or rival nation to copy and exploit valuable American resources for free at massive scale. Our campaign urges a smarter, more effective course that recognizes IP and AI don’t hold each other back but strengthen and propel each other forward. Our campaign hashtag #StrongIPStrongAI reflects this electric, forward moving connection.

The newly launched campaign is designed to rally creators to protect American innovation and ensure America doesn’t squander its strategic edge in highly valuable and sought-after copyrighted works or take costly shortcuts that undermine America’s own resources and give a free pass to foreign competitors. As President Trump said earlier this year, “[t]he future of our great Nation depends on the continued safeguarding of our intellectual property, which fuels economic growth, technological progress, and global competitiveness.”

Over the decades, America’s tradition of strong creators’ rights has produced the world’s strongest and most dominant creative economy and the world’s most innovative and effective high-tech economy. As the President recently explained, “[t]hrough our promotion and protection of intellectual property, we are empowering musicians, writers, authors, scientists, and inventors to focus on what they do best.”

Past American success stories from the creation of the internet to the digital streaming era have shown how strong IP makes new innovations possible. And this campaign will marshal that historical record to ensure policymakers understand licensing creative works doesn’t hold back progress on AI, it fuels it. Real world examples of #StrongIPStrongAI in action!

Through social media, briefings and events, articles and research, rapid response, and above all, by mobilizing the Copyright Alliance’s members and creator grassroots initiatives to tell their own stories about AI and their work, our campaign will help policymakers see for themselves how strong copyright is an indispensable American advantage in the AI arms race and that abandoning that edge would amount to handing the keys to AI leadership to our biggest competitors and rivals for free.
