Copyright Alliance Applauds Today’s Unanimous Passage of Music Modernization Act of 2018 (H.R. 5447) by House

April 25, 2018

STATEMENT

Washington, D.C. – The Copyright Alliance applauded today’s bipartisan approval of the Music Modernization Act (MMA) of 2018 (H.R. 5447), which was passed by the House of Representatives by a unanimous vote of 415-0.

According to Copyright Alliance CEO Keith Kupferschmid, “Today’s unanimous vote further attests to the tremendous support that’s been demonstrated for the Music Modernization Act of 2018 (MMA) Ð which joins together the Music Modernization Act of 2017 (H.R. 4706), the CLASSICS Act (H.R. 3301), and the AMP Act (H.R. 881).

“With widespread bipartisan support across the music and tech sectors, as well as backing from hundreds of thousands of music professionals across the United States, this bill will result in the most significant improvement of music copyright law in more than a generation, as it will help make it easier for creators across the music industry to earn a more equitable living through their creativity.

“The Music Modernization Act of 2018 will help songwriters to be better compensated for their work and positively impact how their music is licensed; enable legacy artists (who recorded music before 1972) to be paid royalties when their music is played on digital radio; and provide a consistent legal process for studio professionals Ð including record producers and engineers to receive royalties for their contributions to music that they help to create.

“We commend Chairman Goodlatte (R-VA); Reps. Collins (R-GA) and Jeffries (D-NY), who introduced the Music Modernization Act; Reps. Issa (R-CA) and Nadler (D-NY), who introduced the CLASSICS Act; Reps. Crowley (D-NY) and Rooney (R-FL), who introduced the AMP Act – and everyone who has supported this legislation since its inception – for their unfailing commitment to the creator and copyright communities, and we look forward to continued support for this bill in the Senate.”
