Copyright Society Panel on the Future of Music Copyright Cases
November 1, 2023 @ 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm EDT
The New York Chapter of the Copyright Society is hosting a program to discuss copyright cases such as the Ninth Circuit’s 2018 decision in Williams v. Gaye, which upheld a jury’s finding that the song “Blurred Lines” infringed copyright in Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up”—resulting in fears that an artist’s musical inspiration would be limited as a result. The discussion will also include a number of other recent high profile music infringement cases brought against artists such as Led Zeppelin, Katy Perry, and Ed Sheeran, which have resulted in findings of non-infringement (thereby dispelling initial fears).
