This week we would like you to meet one of our Individual Creator Members, Graphic Artist Keara Douglas.
1. Can you take us through your process? How long does it take? Does everything you produce make money?
A. My process of creating artwork for others is pretty simple. I create graphic design work along with custom paintings for the public. My orders come to me through email. Once I receive a message, I always send back an order form for the service being requested. The potential client then fills out the form and sends it back to me and I get started on the artwork. Turnaround times vary depending on the artwork being created. Once the artwork is complete, I then send over a proof of the design to the client and they send me back feedback through email. Any changes would be made during this time, along with payment from the client due. Everything I produce typically makes a profit in some way or form.
2. What do you think is the biggest misconception about your line of work?
A. The biggest misconception about my line of work is that it is simple to make and doesn’t require time to complete, and that I am only limited to and can only create graphic design work.
3. When did you first become aware of copyright and why?
A. I first became aware of copyright in the tenth grade of high school from taking an entrepreneurship course for college credit.
4. What is your best piece of advice for creators in your field about copyright and how to protect themselves?
A. The best advice I would give creators would be to limit the amount of paintings or design work that is posted online. If you cannot limit what you post, always place your name on your artwork in plain sight and hidden within the design so you will always know it is yours.
5. What is your biggest copyright-related challenge?
A. My biggest copyright-related challenge right now would be others stealing artwork to post and promote as their own online.
